Purdue Polytechnic Gauging Happiness of New VR Booth via HappyOrNot

Professors Rustin Webster, PhD and Richard Kopp created a Virtual Reality (VR) Booth to enhance the experience for students and visitors at the Purdue Polytechnic New Albany campus.

The professors located and purchased a 1969 phone booth from a local antique store to create a free and enjoyable VR experience for anyone visiting the campus. After a full restoration, which included breakdown, cleaning, cosmetic improvements, and VR equipment integration, the finished product was placed in the main lobby of the Purdue Technology Center (PTC) in New Albany, IN.

The VR booth is equipped with Oculus Rift® state of the art technology and operational 24/7. The electronics, software, and booth have been set up in a manner that will hopefully result in a low maintenance, safe, easy to use, and enjoyable experience.

Before entering the VR booth, the visitors are provided with instructions on how to use the VR booth, as the booth is unsupervised. The user has ability to demo any of the free experiences or purchase one. There is no posted time limit.

Along with the Purdue Polytechnic New Albany campus, the PTC location houses Purdue Research Foundation (PRF) and several startup companies. As part of the project, the professors were interested in finding out user satisfaction levels with the VR booth.

For the entire duration of the Fall 2016 semester, the HappyOrNot Smiley Terminal™ will be deployed to collect data 7 days a week from 7AM to 7PM. HappyOrNot, the global leader in instant customer and employee satisfaction reporting, offers a unique opportunity to collect feedback at the point-of-experience. The smiley terminals capture the feedback with their universally recognizable 4 smileys ranging from dark green (very Happy) to dark red (very Unhappy). The HappyOrNot reporting service analyzes and reports all of the received feedback data back to the administrator.

How effective is the HappyOrNot feedback? Here is what Dr. Rustin Webster had to say:

“Purdue Polytechnic New Albany has used HappyOrNot for a little over two weeks to measure student and visitors’ satisfaction levels of the VR booth. The smiley terminal and its cloud-based scheduling software has made this task effortless and blends seamlessly into the environment.”
